The Cape Fear Highlanders Pipe Band (CFH) was started in the Spring of 1999 by Pipe Major Kirk Rose. As an effort to bring free piping and drumming lessons to youth in the Wilmington, NC area. The CFH started as a part of Venturing in order to attract local Boy Scouts and Girls above the age of 14. There were 5 youth that attended the first meeting in March of 1999 and all continued to play together throughout the years.
CFH had their first performance at the yearly Cape Fear Council Eagle Scout Banquet in 2001. As the band was purchased all instruments and highland wear, not all members had kilts at this time. Some wore borrowed kilts and had only recently started on full bagpipes. It was a great performance!
After several years the band added drumming into the mix and later grew from 5 members to 25 members! Comprised mostly of local youth and young adults. The band competed in grade 5 and many of the members did well in solo and quartet competitions.
Sadly, in 2005 Mr. Rose moved away to be closer with his family. Many of the band members were going off to college and the band decided to take a break.
As of August 2nd, 2009 the band has decided to make another run at it! With the help of 4 of the plank holders, the CFH pipe band was reformed with players from all over NC and SC. It is the goal of the band to compete and most of all to continue the tradition of teaching individuals piping and drumming. The band hopes to become well known throughout the east coast that everyone throughout NC and SC will become interested in learning to play either the bag pipes or highland drums.
Headed by Seth Wells, the band is looking forward to performing and competing during the upcoming 2010 season.
